Wolves can be found in North America, Europe, and Asia. Expanding development, farming, and ranching activity has drastically reduced the wolf’s range and population. Suitable habitat now restricts wolves to remote areas of their traditional range.
But conservation and education efforts will hopefully protect and preserve wolves throughout the world. There are no wolves in the wild in NJ, but you can visit them in captivity.
Reintroduction programs are being implemented and captive wolves in zoos, and wolf research centers are being maintained to insure that the genetic purity of wolf species is preserved. Turtle Back Zoo’s wolves come from Wolf Park Research Center in Battle Ground, Indiana.
In the urban wilderness of Essex County, you can visit wolves at the Turtleback Zoo which has a Wolf Woods habitat. You can see timber wolves close up but safely through glass panels that let you feel like a member of the pack. Several viewing stations let you see the wolves from different angles. You will wolves see crossing a stream, resting on logs and rocky outcroppings and nose-close right at the window. The Zoo is located at 560 Northfield Avenue, West Orange, New Jersey.
If you want to hear the howling of wolves in NJ, you can also head to the mountains of the Delaware Water Gap in Warren County, NJ. At the Lakota Wolf Preserve, there are great photo opportunities with packs of Tundra, Timber, and Arctic wolves in a natural surrounding. There are also bobcats and foxes at the reserve. I just saw another wolf in my back yard this morning, 6/18/2019, which had come out of the woods. I live in Tinton Falls, N.J. near Neptune. I had called the Monmouth County Wildlife division a year ago and they informed me no wolves were in our area. That is bull, because I just spotted another one, which quickly ran away and back into the woods. I have a feeling it is either hunting deer or squirls because we have that game there as well.

Was it larger than a large dog? The best way to tell a wolf from a Coyote is that a Coyote is medium dog size, a coy-dog is about the size of a large dog, and a wolf is much larger and has a heavy snout and paws.
Sunday 10/6/2019 just took picture of wolf in backyard was blowing leaves when about 200 feet back close to Woods ... who said no wolves in new Jersey...

What those people saw were probably coyotes. I live in North Carolina and we have coyotes here and a lot of them are as big as wolves and even look wolf like. They are very discreet and run as soon as you spot one. M. Tucker, Concord, NC

Unless it escaped from the nearby Turtle Back Zoo, it was probably a coyote, coywolf or a dog. Still, no confirmed wolves in the wild in NJ.
My girlfriend saw 2 wolfs in her back yard the size of German Shepherds. Freehold NJ.
Coyotes NOT Wolves...they ((government officials)) would need to spot them, tranquilize, identify ((most likely jaw line, gum line, canine teeth)) to determine species, tag, release. They will most likely will not do this. However, during the shutdown in 2020, it is possible that the packs found in Quebec and Ontario Provinces in Canada made their way down the states thru the extensive riverways that offer them shelter and protection from general populations. The wolf packs of Ontario and Quebec do not extend into the urban areas and are rarely spotted. The quiet and movement and increase in prey herds could make the wolves extend down into the states. The wolves are grey wolves with subspecies found throughout Canada. The wolves are not common in America and are only found in a handful of states mostly introduced or in states near the border of Canada. The prey and bear population has increased in NJ since 2020. Yet it would be hard pressed to believe the wolves would travel down as far as New Jersey when they most likely would peer over into New York and other border states along the Canadian border.
